Obituary For Katherine Barnes
Katherine Twitty Barnes, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Katherine passed away peacefully on Monday, May 12, 2025, at the age of 88, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Her journey here on earth has ended, but her legacy of love, strength, and devotion will continue in the lives of those she touched.
Born on October 22, 1936, to John and Alice Champion Twitty, Katherine was a woman of deep faith and gentle wisdom. She grew up in a home that valued love, family, and hard work-values she carried with her every day of her life. Katherine was baptized on July 10, 1949 in Cedar Creek around Tishomingo, MS from the Forrest Grove Baptist Church congregation.
On September 3, 1955, she married the love of her life, Brice Barnes, and together they built a beautiful life rooted in faith, family, and community. Katherine was a devoted wife and mother who stood beside Brice through every season of life. Together they raised their children and watched their family grow with pride and joy. She lived a quiet, remarkable life-one filled with grace, strength, and purpose. Her greatest joy came from loving others well, and she did so without hesitation. Her impact is immeasurable, not because of grand gestures, but because of her daily acts of love, generosity, and faithfulness. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit remains alive in each life she touched. May we remember her not with sadness, but with gratitude for the years we were blessed to share with her-and may we carry her memory forward in how we love, serve, and cherish one another. Katherine’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. As a long-time member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, she worshiped faithfully and lived out her beliefs in the way she loved and served others. She gave generously, not just through words, but through actions-always ready with a warm meal, a kind word, or a helping hand.
She loved gardening, cooking, and baking-her kitchen was always filled with the aroma of homemade meals and the love that came with every dish she prepared. Whether she was tending to her flowers or making a pie for a neighbor, Katherine found beauty and purpose in the everyday. Her home was a sanctuary, where family gathered, memories were made, and hearts were healed.
She is survived by her son Michael (Pamela) Barnes of Fulton, grandson Brandon (Danielle) Barnes of Winthrop Harbor, IL, and her great-grandchildren Aleena Barnes and Brice Lee Barnes. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Cindy Barnes, three step great-granddaughters: Hailey, Makayla, and Grace Simons of Washington, five nieces, and three nephews-each one blessed by her kindness and love.
She now joins in eternal peace those who went before: her parents, her beloved husband Brice, her son Gary and his wife Mitzi Shumpert Barnes, her sister Johnye Hardin, her brother Bobby Twitty, sister-in-law Ellaween Spencer, brother-in-law Wayne Barnes, and step-granddaughter Crystal Simons.
Katherine’s life will be honored with funeral services on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Senter Funeral Home, with Bro. Jackie Gray and Bro. Tim Holsonback officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM at the funeral home chapel. She will be laid to rest at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, a place close to her heart and her faith.
Serving as pallbearers are Jeff Twitty, Paul Twitty, Doug Hester, Neal George, Baden Honeycutt, and Jim Shumpert-a group of family and friends who shared in her life’s journey and now carry her to her final resting place.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Katherine’s memory to the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, continuing her legacy of care and support for her community.
Condolences
